Thanks a million to Machismo Foghat, handsome host of Dr. Sketchy's Dallas for reminding me that my my mother makes the best Kahlua you've ever had.
Just imagine how impressed your friends will be when you mix them a White Russian and tell them that you made the Kahlua yourself. Okay, I get it, Kahlua is the brand, really it's just coffee liqueur, but whatever. ;)
Rae Lynn's Coffee Liqueur:
Boil (on medium, you don't want it to burn) 1 quart of water and 3 cups of sugar for about 45 minutes. Yes, 45 minutes, you can wait that long, go watch T.V.
Add about 1 cup of coffee crystals (my mother recommends Maxwell House blue and yellow label). Boil for 15 minutes. Keep an eye on it, if it over boils, you'll spend the rest of the day scrubbing your stove; that stuff doesn't come off easy!
Let everything cool down (go walk the dog) and add 3 tablespoons of vanilla and 3 cups of Vodka.
And that's all there is to it! These also make nice gifts too, just sayin'!

well, making your own kahlua isn't for everyone. there's plenty of good stuff in the store if you don't find pleasure in making your own.
Mr. Metafedora: Some people like the time it takes and the feeling you get from making your own stuff. You know, like pumpkin pie...hmmmmmm?
